The Children’s Village operates seven licensed childcare programs, some of which are located within the Ottawa Carleton District School Board’s elementary schools. Our Centres are licensed by the Ministry of Education and regulated by the Child Care and Early Years Act (CCEYA). Please see our locations for more information. All of our Licensed Childcare Centres offer year round child care services that focus on supporting families. The Children’s Village of Ottawa-Carleton has a long-standing partnership with the OCDSB that is extremely successful and is very much in keeping with the values of a seamless day.
All of our Centres develop their programs using How Does Learning Happen: Ontario’s Pedagogy for the Early Years and Early Learning for Every Child Today: A Framework for Ontario Early Childhood Settings to support an emergent curriculum. Our Registered Early Childhood Educators use the College of Early Childhood Educators’ Code of Ethics and Standards of Practice and the Occupational Standards for Early Childhood Educators to guide their practice in building caring and responsive relationships; curriculum and pedagogy; safety, health and well-being in the learning environment; professionalism and leadership; professional boundaries, dual relationships and conflicts of interest; and confidentiality, release of information and duty to report.
Philosophy
At the Children’s Village we believe that, regardless of where children begin in life, they are on a path to reach their full potential. This philosophy is reflected in everything we do.
We have developed a peaceful home-like atmosphere in all of our locations which is welcoming to children and their families. We implement an emergent curriculum and project approach in our Toddler, Preschool, Kindergarten and School Age programs. Children’s interests and play experiences guide the curriculum development of the program.
The Children’s Village is committed to promoting the healthy well-being and development of all children by:
- Offering a nurturing, safe and comfortable home like environment;
- Emphasizing learning through play by offering a variety of age appropriate opportunities that facilitate the social, emotional, physical, creative, language and cognitive development of children;
- Allowing children to learn through play and encounters with both structured and unstructured materials;
- Creating an environment, which encourages children to become independent by offering opportunities to communicate ideas, opinions and participate in the “collective” process of activity planning;
- Developing and maintaining a cooperative relationship with parents through ongoing communication and support;
- Creating a peaceful and accepting environment that appreciates the diversity of cultures, is free from all forms of discrimination, and where children are unconditionally respected;
- Establishing and maintaining a professional working relationship with our school and community partners;
- Observing, documenting, guiding and by facilitating and nurturing the creative process, play experiences and projects;
- Using a diverse approach based on their observations of the individual needs of the children.
